Mountain Lions Preview the Bluebonnet Master List 2013-2014
The week of September 2nd, the students in third, fourth and fifth grades at H.R. Moye will begin reading this year's nominees for the 2014 Bluebonnet Award. I love introducing the new year's master list to the children, love the excitement our third graders have at being invited to share a program that our fourth and fifth graders are doing. This year's books are really good, too, so that makes my job of reading them to the children even easier. There are enough easy picture books, biographies and nonfiction titles that I should be able to read every class the five titles they must read before they can participate in voting for their favorite. But there are also some really poignantly sweet chapter books that I hope the children will be able to share with their classroom teachers. I am excited to see old familiar faces and to meet our new Mountain Lions. Let the games begin!
April Brings More Wee-Search
Penguins, seals, famous women, soil, ecosystems and American Presidents are among the subjects we have been wee-searching in the library.
The children have been using print and online resources to conduct research on a variety of topics. PebbleGo continues to be a big hit and a favorite database among all of our students when they are seeking information. I hope to be able to provide one more research experience for the children before summer vacation.

Postcards from Camp
This year's Bluebonnet voting was so close! Only two votes separated the winning title from the second place choice Scarum Fair. Just goes to show the importance of a single vote.

A Talented Artist
Guess who drew this picture perfect Angry Bird in the library today using the Paint program? I'll give you some hints ... he is in third grade, has two sisters and has read all of the Super Diaper Baby and Captain Underpants books. If you guessed Ricardo C. in 3C, you are absolutely correct! Great art work, Ricardo!!

Little Red Riding Hood in a Pink SweaterMoye second graders will be learning to use the library computers for research over the next few weeks as students who are now in third, fourth and fifth grades have done. The video clip to the left serves as a reminder to all of us about the lesson we can learn from Little Red Riding Hood...never talk to or share information with a stranger.

Feelin' the Love in February
Bluebonnet Voting Begins
The suspense is killing me! Which book will win? From the master list of twenty great Bluebonnet nominees, children at Moye read combinations of the following books: Clever Jack Takes the Cake (my fav), Hamster Magic, Zita the Space Girl, Hero, Ruth and the Green Book, Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie, Scarum Fair, Hot Diggity Dog, and Postcards from Camp. The books in the light blue were books I read to the students during library visits. I am partial to the book Clever Jack because it was one I read and suggested for the master list before I had to resign from the Bluebonnet Selection committee. I will be announcing the winning title at Moye and the winning title across our great state on Friday. Stay tuned!
The AR Store Opens!
With the second nine weeks behind us, the AR store has opened. Slowly but surely, Ms. Manso and I have been calling the children who have met their AR goal to come shop at the store. I am collecting Box Tops for Education, Labels for Education, Price's bottle caps and aluminum cans to help pay for the incentives in the store. I appreciate all of the donations from Moye faculty, staff, family and our wonderful students. And thank you to my best friend from high school, Sharon, who purchased some of the treats in the store. It takes a village!
Special recognition goes to Ms. Cota and her fantabulous fourth graders, all of whom reached their AR goal this nine weeks. Woo hoo, 4A! And thanks to all my Mountain Lions for reading and taking AR tests!

The Joint's Jumping in January...
NOTE TO SELF: Must do a Library Etiquette Review
I love the enthusiasm our students have for checking out books but this past week I was saddened to find the shelves turned upside down after some of our upper grade classes visited the library. It seems some of our students have developed amnesia about the library manners they have been taught in orientation lessons in the past. Ms. Manso and I were dismayed to find books on the shelves slipping and sliding all over the place as if no one remembered how to use a shelf marker or how to stand falling books back up. Guess I will do a reminder lesson next week.
Check Out TumbleBooks!
Hey guys, check out the link to TumbleBooks available under the Resources tab above. When you click on TumbleBooks you will be directed to the Harris County Public Library (Houston, Texas) website link. Through the link to TumbleBooks, you can listen to books being read aloud, read books yourself online, play games and watch educational videos. Many of the books are part of the AR program and you can take the tests on them, too! Thank you to my little sister and fellow librarian, Valerie, for sharing this with us. Check it out!
Rest in Peace, Sweet Rusty, the Pig Dog
On Saturday, January 12, my sweet puppy, Piggie, died. I have missed him so much this week. Today when I talked with the students in 3C and 3D about writing persuasive paragraphs, I used the example of writing a persuasive letter to my husband, Paul, asking him to consider getting me a new dog. We came up with all the reasons why Paul should buy me a new dog...I would be responsible for feeding, watering, walking, bathing my new pup and pay for everything with my paycheck. We used the OREO model for constructing a persuasive paragraph...O for opinion, R for reasons, E for explanations, O for opinion restated. While I would love to have a new puppy someday, I miss Piggie too much to replace him with a new dog quite yet. Maybe someday. And when the time is right, I will now know how to persuade my husband to see things my way!
Snow Falls on Our First Day Back!
The minute I heard that there was a good chance for snow on Thursday and Friday after New Year's Eve, I began texting all of my Moye buddies to enlist their help snow-dancing. Everyone was most enthusiastic about helping and our efforts more than paid off with over three inches of beautiful pristine snow. But even with that much accumulation, we only had a delayed start time for school on Friday. Our world was a winter wonderland, if only for a few days.
Skarlet Comes for a Visit
Our sweet former student Skarlet surprised us with a visit the last week of school before Christmas vacation began. She has transferred to Whitaker. Thank you, Skarlet, for brightening our lives with your beautiful smile and boundless energy. We miss you at Moye!
Oh, What Fun...Inventory!
Ms. Manso and I have spent most of December conducting a much needed library inventory. We began to worry when we started finding books on the shelves that had not been checked in through the computer and books being returned that had not been checked out. I spoke with Kayla Anderson, the library administrator for EPISD and she suggested we do an inventory. I am so glad we did!
Before scanning the books, audio-visual materials and paperbacks, Ms. Manso and I had to go shelf by shelf and put everything in call number order. We found many books that had made the move to Moye from Wainwright and decided most of those items needed to go bye-byes. We found a number of books that had been purchased the first year we were here at Moye, 2006, that had never been checked out so we withdrew those items, too. In total we wound up "weeding" over 1,600 books and videos from the collection.
When the inventory was all said and done, we found that 184 items were missing and not scanned during inventory. With the average price of a book being around $20.00 today, that totals almost $4000.00 worth of missing resources. Makes me sad. The pictures below show some of my favorite Moye babies helping to mark out the call numbers and barcodes on the old books that we withdrew from the collection. These books will be given to the students during P.E. this week. Merry Christmas, Moye!

A Lone Musketeer
Above left, Ernesto Torres from Ms. Aranda's fifth grade class also got into the action with his version of Origami Yoda.

The Three Musketeers Fold Origami Yoda
Three of Mr. Ditlevson's fifth grade boys, Uriel, Juan and Hugo, have enjoyed the 2012 Bluebonnet Award-winning book The Strange Case of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger. They even folded their own version of the advice-giving Yoda and his companion, Darth Paper, from Darth Paper Strikes Back, the sequel to the Yoda book. I have sent an email to Mr. Angleberger asking him to post the picture of Moye's own origami artists so stay tuned and hopefully, we will see the Three Moye Musketeers in the near future at: origamiyoda.com .

The Library Constitution, Thanks to 2F.
After studying the Constitution in their classroom with Ms. Chavez, the students in 2F came to the library for an orientation with Skoob, the shelf elf. We discussed the rules and then decided to write them in a Constitution format just as the rules for our country have been written. The brilliant babies in 2F wrote every word of this Library Constitution, I just transcribed what they dictated. So I was to the Library Constitution as Jacob Shallus was to the U.S. Constitution. Does that make me famous?
Feeling Optimistic for October~
I can't believe the first full month of the school year is behind us! We have accomplished much over the past few weeks and now all of the Moye Mountain Lions have been to the library for at least one visit. I look forward to getting my altar together for Dias de los Muertos and hope to have all of my October decorating done before I leave school on Friday afternoon. There just never seem to be enough hours in the day to do everything I want to do.
I am going to try to start every morning this month more optimistic about everything...after all, I have a great life, a loving family and happy home, good health. And I go to work everyday to a job I love, working with the best babies in the whole wide world...YOU! |

Slipping into September!
With our hundred degree afternoons so far this month, it doesn't feel much like fall...yet. But it is beginning to look like autumn in the library. I love this time of year, don't you? The colors, the cooler temperatures (?), wearing sweaters, decorating with scarecrows and pumpkins. As we move into our first full month of school, you can follow our library activities by clicking above on the tab for this school year. Enjoy!
And now, as promised, Ms. Aranda's ARdy the Owl-themed bulletin boards. The children will earn stamps on their white owl silhouettes for each book they read and test successfully on. Once they have earned a certain number of stamps, they will be able to turn their owl shape around to reveal their ARdy Owl. Great idea, Ms. Aranda. Darling board!
Whooo's an AR Star?
This year I have borrowed a great idea from Ms. Aranda in fifth grade by adopting an owl theme for our Accelerated Reader program. Ms. Aranda used owls last year on a beautiful AR bulletin board she created outside the classroom to recognize her students as they read and tested on books through AR. Her classroom's AR "mascot" became a little ceramic owl she and the children nicknamed ARdy! I fell in love with the idea even though I have never cared much for birds. But Ms. Aranda's owls won me over. The bulletin board on left is outside the library and will be used to recognize this year's Moye's AR stars in each class every nine weeks. I hope to go on a field trip down to 5B later today to snap a photo of their owl themed AR bulletin board and will share it with you here.
